We focus on the basics that are crucial
to cognitive development
Young Athlete™ sites are required to practice a minimum of eight sessions. It is recommended that these sessions are conducted over eight consecutive weeks. The program offers summer and winter sessions. The Young Athletes program ends with a culminating event, much like a District or State Games. Here, athletes demonstrate the skills they’ve learned or improved upon over the weeks and participate in an awards ceremony in which all Young Athletes are acknowledged.
The practices are held at the Middleburg Heights Recreation Center, conveniently located right off 71 at 15700 Bagley Road, Middleburg Heights, OH 44130.
Young Athletes practice a variety of skills building on their strengths to eventually play sports:
• Walking and Running
• Balance and Jumping
• Trapping and Catching
• Throwing
• Striking
• Kicking
• Advanced Skills
We hope that Young Athletes will prepare an easy transition for athletes with cognitive disabilities to participate in Special Olympics when they turn 8 years old.
The Young Athletes program includes several resources to guide family members, educators and other professionals as they conduct Young Athletes with their children, brothers, sisters, cousins, grandchildren, students or patients.
How much does it cost the athletes and their families to participate in this program?
It’s free. Fundraising efforts, generous donations to the program, and volunteers enable us to offer this great program and all events free of charge to any family that would like to participate. Young Athletes Cleveland has been a huge success in bringing new experiences and opportunities to the special-needs athletes and families, and is yet another point of pride for Middleburg Heights, a community known for serving the special-needs community.
